We are interested in how the ear and brain work together to interpret the complex array of acoustic information (e.g., speech, music, and environmental sounds) that we encounter in everyday life. The basic science that we perform has many practical applications in fields such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, and automatic speech recognition.

Primary research areas include:

  • Peripheral mechanisms of hearing and hearing loss
  • Auditory implants
  • Pitch perception
  • Auditory streaming and object formation

We study many aspects of hearing, ranging from how the ear processes sound to how the brain interprets the signals it receives from the ear. Most of our work involves behavioral (or psychoacoustic) studies using people with normal or impaired hearing. For information about our current research studies, see the Research tab on the website navigation.
